Midwest Powders FAQ

What are Midwest Powders?

Midwest Powders are smokeless reloading powders offered by American Reloading. For each powder, we provide our own test load data to give customers a reference point for load development. When possible, we will also provide a commercially available powder with a comparable burn rate as an additional reference.

Any commercial powder comparison is based on burn rate only and does not mean the powders are identical or directly interchangeable.

What does the MP number mean?

The MP number identifies the specific Midwest Powder and generally follows burn rate, with lower MP numbers representing faster-burning powders and higher MP numbers representing slower-burning powders.

If a powder has a suffix such as -1, -2, -3, etc., this indicates different lots of the same powder.

Is Midwest Powder the same as the commercial powder it is compared to?

No. When we provide a commercial powder comparison, it means the powder has a comparable burn rate based on our testing. It does not mean the powders are identical or contain identical properties.

The comparison is provided as a reference for load development. We recommend reviewing published load data for the comparable commercial powder along with the test load data provided for the specific Midwest Powder you purchased.

Whether using published commercial load data or our test load data, always start 10% below the listed charge and work your load up carefully.

Where can I find load data for Midwest Powders?

We provide test load data for each Midwest Powder whenever available. This information can be found on the product listing and/or the powder container.

When possible, we also provide a comparable powder based on burn rate. Published load data for that powder can be used as an additional reference when developing your load.

If you have one of our powders and need our test load data or help identifying a comparable powder, you can always reach out to us.

Whether using published commercial load data or our test load data, always start 10% below the listed charge and carefully work your load up.

Can Midwest Powder be used for my caliber?

Many Midwest Powders can be used across multiple calibers and applications. The appropriate powder will depend on the caliber, bullet weight, firearm, and other components being used.

Our test load data and comparable powder information can help determine whether a specific Midwest Powder may be suitable for your application. If you are unsure whether one of our powders is appropriate for your caliber, you can always reach out to us for guidance.

Is there a HazMat fee when ordering powder?

No. We do not charge a separate HazMat fee on powder orders. The price shown for the powder and the applicable shipping cost are what you will pay at checkout.

How long does powder take to ship?

Please allow 5–7 business days for powder orders to process and ship. Once your order has shipped, tracking information will be provided so you can follow its progress.

How is powder shipped?

Powder orders are shipped via UPS Ground. A signature is not required for delivery.

Can you ship powder to Alaska or Hawaii?

No. We are unable to ship powder to Alaska or Hawaii. Powder can only be shipped to eligible addresses within the contiguous United States.

Can powder be returned?

No. Due to shipping and safety requirements, all powder sales are final and cannot be returned or exchanged.

If there is a major issue with the powder you received, please reach out to us with the details and we will see what we can do to help resolve the issue.

How should I store smokeless powder?

Smokeless powder should be stored in its original container in a cool, dry location away from heat, sparks, open flames, and other sources of ignition. Keep powder securely stored and follow all applicable local requirements for the storage of smokeless powder.
